Here’s Why You Too Might Not Have Sounded the Tsunami Sirens in Maui
There has been quite a bit of controversy as to whether or not the tsunami sirens should have been sounded during the Lahaina fires. Most of us probably believe that had we been in a decision-making position, we would have turned those sirens on. But decisions “under fire” are rarely so easy to make. Dylan did a really good job in giving very good reasons why those sirens should not have been sounded.

In reference to sounding the emergency sirens for the Lahaina fire, I would say this. Having served a 20-year military career as a soldier/firefighter and prior to that, a firefighter in my hometown, any one I knew in the business would have activated those sirens without fail. I also worked at an EOC (Emergency Operations Center). Saving lives was the top and only mission! To imply that the people of Maui and Lahaina would’t have known the difference between a fire and a tsunami is an insult to their intelligence. It saddens me that people died due an individual who was not suitably qualified or properly trained for that position. I went through several tsunami warnings when I lived on Oahu, and as I can recall, had plenty of warning.
Thanks for sharing. There is a lot to uncover and I hope we’ll get all the facts of the matter. I would definitely like to know what the actual reason was.
