Swimming in awesome tidepools!
This is a dangerous activity so only do this with someone that has done it before and knows the area and conditions. That said, there are few things as totally cool as swimming in natural tidepools like this one. If you ever get the chance to do this safely, it’s unforgettable.

The biggest danger is getting swept out to sea. When I hear sirens, I often think that’s where they’re heading and attempt to rescue another. A 21 year old California visitor was taking selfies, a wave came up, swept her out and was never found. I felt so sorry for her as well as her friends who stood and watched and couldn’t help. That place has a fence which is often ignored as people walk around it. And, here’s a thought. If the ocean is real calm with not a great deal of water exchange, if at all, you are literally swimming in drek. We haven’t had that many calm days here this summer which can lull people into complacency. When tourists ask me about it, I ask them not to go and won’t give direct directions. When I relay a few of the accidents, they usually decide to skip it. Another hint if I may, “if rocks are wet, don’t stand on them”.
Mahalo Joy for sharing!
I know where that tide pool is…. ;)
Which tidepool is this?
The photographer did not state which
Looks like it could be the Makapu’u Tidepools, but I might be wrong. Super cool but you have to be careful because the tide will rise the later it gets and can potentially completely cover it.
Aloha !! Peter, What makes tidepool so dangerous ? Is it because it is deeper in the middle of the pool, It looks really great to take a swim, I notice that the people are swimming close to the edge , Mahalo for exampling !
The danger is that you can get a freak wave come in from the outside, crash over the wall, and injure the people inside
