We answered a question from Tom of Oxford PA which I know is on the mind of many:

In the Beat of Hawaii blog I’ve seen an increasing amount of comments from Mainlanders who have been berated by negative, vulgar and offensive comments from locals, including one couple who’ve been going to Kauai for 20 years and just bought a condo in Kauai. In February, they and their family were verbally abused and “flipped the bird”. I realize the pandemic has increased the stress and fear of locals vs. tourists (haoles), but is this a bigger problem? If so, why would a mainlander (like me) buy a property in Hawaii? My wife and I have been going to Kauai for years and planned to retire in Kauai next year, but now i’m not so sure. Mahalo
