What about Coqui frogs on the Big Island?
Sharon from Lakeside, CA asks:
I would like to know about the coqui frogs on the big island. If I moved to the dry side would I be able to avoid the loud noise? Since this is audio, could you play a recording sample of the sound?

I’ve never heard them on Kona. Maybe I am immune but it would be hard for me to imagine they would ever survive in numbers there – it is just too dry. Hilo, there can be tons of them……the good news is legend has them going all night….reality is, they slow down dramatically by 2AM. And if you stay in the right place – they have means of keeping the numbers down….regular night sprays with diluted citric acid works well. Most plants don’t mind. Homeowners do it often. I have had induced insomnia from the little critters at my favourite Hilo bay hotel (because it was cheap and very Hawaiian – locals will know which one it was)…..but the hotel has shut down….so have been using AirBNB’d houses/apartments since without any issues. Hear a few – but not enough to care about.
